When investing, deciding where to put your money and how to manage it can be somewhat overwhelming. Lakeside Portfolio Services eases the process by creating and monitoring a range of investment portfolios that can be matched to the goals and risk parameters of Lakeside’s clients. Lakeside Compliance Director and Investment Committee Member, Nathan Hibbert, explains more.

Can you give us a brief overview of Lakeside Portfolio Services?

N: This is a discretionary fund management service through which we build and manage a portfolio of investments on behalf of clients. Lakeside’s financial advisers work with their individual clients to establish the amount of money they are looking to invest, their financial goals and the level of risk they are willing to take on the investment. The Lakeside Portfolio Services team then invests that money in a portfolio that aligns with the client’s objectives and sits within the agreed risk parameters.

How is the investment managed, and how often are the portfolios reviewed?

N: The service’s discretionary nature means we can consistently monitor the Lakeside portfolios and be reactive and proactive to external conditions and changes in the market. As a minimum, the portfolios are reviewed every three months and altered accordingly. We look at whether the fund manager is still offering value for money, where the money is invested geographically, the sectors it’s invested in and carry out technical analysis to assess the portfolio risk.

What are the potential risks and key benefits of this type of investment?

N: Lakeside Portfolio Services offers diversification across a global market, so clients aren’t putting all their eggs into one basket. We also continually keep an eye on the investment to maintain the portfolio in line with specific risk tolerances. Clients need to trust the process and be prepared for a long-term investment of at least five years as sometimes the value of a portfolio will go down. The outcome should be much better growth than leaving the money sat in a bank account and also reduces the risk of leaving money in an underperforming sector or market.

What sets the Lakeside Portfolio apart from others?

N: The link between Lakeside FS, our advisory firm, and Lakeside Portfolio Services means that we build our portfolios specifically with our Lakeside clients in mind. So, there isn’t a disconnect between the client and the outcome of the investment. We also offer a good track record of risk-adjusted performance and consistently lower costs when compared with the big discretionary fund managers. To give clients complete peace of mind that their investment is being handled effectively, our portfolios are regularly reviewed by an independent body. In our latest review, conducted by Elston, we gained five-star ratings across the board, which included assessing how the portfolios integrate with financial planning and suitability for the client; how the portfolios are designed, managed, governed and reviewed; and the results achieved, both from a returns and risk perspective. Such reviews enable us to celebrate our strengths and reflect on any areas for improvement so that we can continue to deliver the best possible service to our clients
